Boarding the bus in Beijing, at the start of a typical route. At that time, they were so overcrowded that if you didn't go the start there was little chance you'd be able to get on. Even so, you could still expect to battle crowds as these people were doing.
The silver lining in all this is that often the conductors couldn't reach you on the bus, and then you wouldn't have to pay.
