I don't know if this ferry actually sailed between Banjul and Bakau, two towns which are close together on the Gambia coast and connected by a decent road. It seems more likely it ran across the river to Barra on the north shore.
The Gambia is a decidedly odd place, just a thin strip along the river Gambia, which for much of its length is really a tidal estuary. It should probably merge with Senegal, and there have been plans in the past to create Senegambia. However, they apparently fell through because of inherited nationalism; too many Gambians were proud to be linked to Britain instead of France, or something like that.
