Image

Three shots from Göreme, Cappadocia.

Millions of years ago, volcanic eruptions buried the area in a layer of tuff, a soft rock that can be easily carved. At various times people have dug into this to build houses, churches and even entire underground towns. The left two pictures show a couple of (much eroded) ancient cave dwellings still standing in the modern town. The right is the entrance to the nearby underground town of Derinkuyu.

It's a pity that we didn't have more time to spend there, taking more and better photographs. As often happened then, though, visa limits forced us to rush a bit to meet a schedule. I especially regret this instance since the area was still relatively unspoiled by tourists then and, from what I read, has been overrun by them since.
