Photography 🢒 Hong Kong 1992-1995

Image

Hong Kong's old airport at Kai Tak, built on reclaimed land jutting into the harbour.

This used to be one of the world's great air approaches. Planes would have to turn and drop suddenly before landing, as the Air France 747 is doing in the inset.

In the run-up to the handover in 1997, they finally built a newer and much bigger airport on an outer island, leading to many accusations that the British were cashing in before leaving. While the new airport undoubtedly functions better, it lacks the peculiar charm of the old.

You may notice the uniform height of the buildings in the foreground. While Kai Tak was operational, construction in Kowloon was limited in height (to about 17 stories). The difference is easy to see when compared to the much taller buildings in the background.
