These are a few of my best or most interesting photos from different places in the world, plus a bit of graphic design I’ve done. I started taking pictures when I was around four years old, so quite a few good shots aren’t here and I will add more in future - check back! These aren’t in any particular order. Click on the thumbnails of each to see a larger version. Most are formatted for a 640x480 screen but a few are 800x600 wallpaper.
Most of these were taken with a Canon AE-1, using one of 3 lenses (24 mm, 50 mm or 60-300 mm). This remained my regular camera for many years because of its great durability, but I have recently gone digital; the numerous advantages to not carrying film were just too big to ignore. A couple shots here were taken using an older Canon GIII QL17 frame-focus camera, and a few were shot with a Canon A-1.

These are wallpaper images I did for the login screen of Linux systems, one for every major new version I released when I did this as part of my business. The actual images are usually 1600x1200 in resolution but the versions here are only 640x480. All of them were made using GIMP, combining photos from my collection and sometimes a bit of rendering using Bryce or Poser. I created all of these on a CRT and it was sometimes striking how different they could look on an LCD monitor. The contrast is a big element in some and it’s hard to make them look good on both.
I think this one stands as one of my best in technical terms, but it wasn’t very well received. Many people who saw it found it spooky or gloomy, and after a few weeks looking at it I came to agree with them. The head was generated in Poser, and the castle in the background is easily recognized as Carcassonne (the same shot in its original form is above). The fractal tracings came from Gnofract4d.
An idea I’d had for a long time; the Linux exodus from the evil Microsoft empire. Although well received, I’ve never been satisfied with it; I rushed it too much. It needs chariots. Bryce4 rendered the background scene, and then I added the people shots - the penguin was done with Poser.
The Jigsaw theme worked out better than I expected and people liked it, but I was never quite happy with the Linux build I stuck it onto, so this one didn’t get as much time on show as it should have. Dia provided the basic jigsaw skeleton, which I filled in with bits of various images from my collection.
The “digital beanstalk” was the last I produced, and still one of my favourites. I toyed with the idea of having a character walking along the fractal stalk. Gnofract4d provided the fractal bridge, and the bean images are taken from various places (mostly my image collection).
Miscellaneous
In a pub in Kathmandu, taken on New Year’s Eve 1999. I used only native light and took it by mounting my camera on the end of the table with a clamp. This won top marks in the monthly camera club contest.
